Physical Sunscreens

Prevent light from penetrating skin by reflection.

  • Zinc oxide.
  • Titanium dioxide.

Chemical Sunscreens

Convert light absorbed into skin into (usually) benign heat.

  • Avobenzone (Parsol, Eusolex, Escalol).
  • Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S).
  • Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3).
  • Benzophenone-4 (Sulisobenzone).
  • Ecamsule (Mexoryl SX).
  • Drometrizole trisiloxane (Mexoryl XL).
  • Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (ensulizole).
  • Homosalate.
  • Octinoxate (Octyl methoxycinnamate).
  • Octisalate (Octyl salicylate).
  • Octocrylene.

Hybrid Sunscreen Chemicals

Partially reflect and partially absorb and convert light.

  • Bisoctrizole (Tinosorb M).
  • Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S).

UVA Blockers

Absorb primarily carcinogenic, aging and rosacea-exacerbating rays only.

  • Avobenzone (Parsol, Eusolex, Escalol).
  • Ecamsule (Mexoryl SX).
  • Drometrizole trisiloxane (Mexoryl XL).

UVB Blockers

Absorb primarily carcinogenic, burning, tanning and rosacea-excerbating rays only, common as sole agents in products for deliberate tanning and in beach products.

  • Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (ensulizole).
  • Homosalate.
  • Octinoxate (Octyl methoxycinnamate).
  • Octisalate (Octyl salicylate).
  • Benzophenone-4 (Sulisobenzone).

UVA and UVB Blockers

Provide varying degrees of partial UVA and UVB protection.

  • Zinc oxide (100% UVA and UVB block if opaque, not microfine zinc).
  • Titanium dioxide (partial UVA and UVB block, much higher protection if opaque, not microfine titanium).
  • Biscotrizole (Tinosorb M).
  • Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S).
  • Octocrylene.
